From Assessment to Execution – Safe, Tailored, and Goal-Oriented Programming
This extensive and applied module prepares learners to confidently design, deliver, and evaluate personalised fitness programmes that are safe, effective, and aligned with individual needs and goals. Students will explore the full structure of a training session—from warm-up through to cool-down—and learn how to apply foundational principles such as specificity, progressive overload, and adherence to support long-term progress.
The module emphasizes information gathering and screening, teaching students how to conduct health assessments, PAR-Qs, and informed consent to identify contraindications and tailor programming to fitness level, health status, and exercise history. Students will also learn to evaluate participant expectations, motivation, and previous experience to ensure client readiness and suitability.
In line with national and international codes of ethics (e.g. EHFA), learners will be trained to uphold the legal and professional responsibilities of a qualified fitness instructor, with an emphasis on client safety, confidentiality, and competency.
The module covers resistance training techniques in depth, including correct lifting form, machine setup, and body alignment for both resistance machines and free weight exercises (e.g. squats, bench press, deadlifts). Students will explore the muscles targeted, identify multi- vs. single-joint exercises, and modify technique to accommodate individual needs. Instruction includes safe spotting, teaching cues, and communication techniques to provide real-time corrections and feedback.
Learners will also gain proficiency in cardiovascular machine use (e.g. treadmill, rower, bike) and explore cardiorespiratory training methods including interval, continuous, and varied-intensity protocols, with attention to evidence-based dose/response relationships.
Key aspects include:
How to structure and progress programmes based on physiological adaptation
Application of resistance training systems (e.g. supersets, circuits, pyramids) based on client goals
How to evaluate and reflect on session outcomes, gathering feedback from clients and peers
Effective modifications and alternatives for injury prevention, posture correction, and movement quality
By the end of this module, learners will be equipped with the technical and interpersonal skills to safely coach clients through resistance and cardiovascular training programmes, adapting them over time to ensure continual progress and long-term success.
